Difficult music - Mendelssohn Sonata Op. 6

I'm learning (try to learn) Mendelssohn Sonata Op. 6 3rd and 4th movements. This sonata is not played much but beautiful. The 3rd movement doesn't have key or meter. Very odd. I read this is because Mendelssohn is "talking". Here is the first page:
