Retired after a public health career in medicine and information technology at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Ed is an amateur pianist who also enjoys world travel, foreign language study, local politics, gardening, woodworking, and oil painting. He teaches classes in English as a second language as a volunteer for the International Rescue Committee and serves as a volunteer docent at the Fernbank Museum of Natural History. (When not isolating from pandemics!)

Cyclosporiasis
A multi-state outbreak of diarrhea due to cyclosporiasis has been in the news lately. At this time, iceberg lettuce from one supplier is suspected to be the source of this microscopic parasite. A specific stool exam by microscopy can diagnose cyclosporiasis, and there is a specific effective drug treatment for it. Dr. William Foege
Dr. William Foege, former Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, died Saturday 1/24/26 at age 89. He was Director when I started at CDC in 1978. I have never met a medical colleague and leader that I respected more. He was a giant in public health.
