GMG Interview Series-Fredericka King

Ms. King is on the faculty of the New England Conservatory where she teaches piano and music history. She has performed in the US, Europe, and South America. She performs as a soloist and collaborative pianist.

Fredericka met Utako at the Cliburn Teachers Program at TCU one summer and became involved with GMG. Fredericka’s mother had a love for music and had many recordings of classical music which Fredericka listened to as a child. She began taking lessons and rarely needed anyone to push her along. She was self-motivated as she loved to play the piano. During her career she has highlighted women composers and African American composers in her classes. Fredericka offers some advice about playing for an audience. It takes courage to step out and share. Be willing to take risks, and if it doesn’t go as well as you like, it’s not the end of the journey. Fredericka enjoys playing collaborative music. She suggests starting with one other musician and building on that. Music workshops, competitions, and festivals can be a great addition to your learning experience. Piano Texas is her favorite one. Fredericka is so delightful to talk with, and we hope to meet her in person one day. You will learn so much more about her as you watch her interview.
